Compassionate Paediatric Repatriation Across Continents

UAE Clean

Case Review

In 2024, Universal Air Evac successfully conducted a repatriation flight for a 2-year-old child. The journey began in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and concluded in Stockholm, Sweden, where the patient was safely handed over to receiving medical personnel.

Patient Condition and Care

The young patient had been admitted in critical condition, requiring ICU-level care and multiple blood transfusions. Thanks to excellent management in Dar es Salaam, the child was stabilised sufficiently for air ambulance transport. During the flight, Universal Air Evac utilised a paediatric harness to secure the child. As she was clinically stable, the harness allowed her to be safely fastened to her mother, using a baby carrier. To provide additional comfort, the team advised the mother to bring the child’s favourite toys and snacks, helping to minimise anxiety during the journey.

Flight Logistics and Challenges

The flight covered a total duration of just under 12 hours, requiring three technical fuel stops.
Universal Air Evac obtained 11 flight clearances to ensure smooth passage and coordinated special routing approval to navigate safely through a war zone airspace. Additionally, the journey highlighted a stark temperature transition. Dar es Salaam was experiencing summer heat, with temperatures exceeding 30°C, while Stockholm was in the grip of winter, with temperatures dropping to -10°C.

Warm clothing was prepared for the crew, the mother, and the child to ensure comfort upon arrival.

A Mission of Care and Expertise

This case exemplifies Universal Air Evac’s commitment to meticulous planning and compassionate patient care. By addressing complex logistical challenges and prioritising patient and family comfort, the team ensured a smooth and safe journey for the child and her family.
